Magic Cookie Bars

This was my first time making these magic layer bars. I tried a few topping combinations and Jeff and my favorite was the “smore” bars with chocolate chips and marshmallows and the “Nutty” bars with chocolate chips, coconut, and walnuts. The latter combination is more similar to the original recipe, so that is what I have listed below. However, keep in mind that you can make your own combinations with your favorites:)

I liked these bars, but they are definitely rich and sweet. I think most of the sweetness came from the sweetened condensed milk, which acted as the glue to all the toppings. Next time, I would use less milk to tone down the sweetness a bit. This is not reflected in the recipe, so if you want it to be slightly less sweet, reduce the milk. You should have enough to just cover the crust.  These bars stored really well too, lasting almost a week.

1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs (I crushed whole graham crackers)
3/4 cup butter, melted
1  14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup coconut

other toppings= marshmallows, butterscotch, etc…

In a small bowl, combine graham cracker crumbs and butter until it’s moist. Press the mixture into a 9 by 13 glass pan. Top with sweetened condensed milk. Then, add toppings evenly. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Let them cool, cut into pieces and serve.

  1. Oh yes…my grandma made these for us every Christmas. She used butterscotch and chocolate chips with the nuts and coconut. Sooo yummy. Why don’t I make them more often??? Thanks for the reminder. 🙂
