My mom has been making this apple crisp for ages. I adapted it a little bit to make it a smidge healthier and to add some walnut, which I enjoy. I love crisps though. Its like just eating the filling of a pie…and it’s a hundred times better than eating pie crust which is LOADED with butter.
I make these in large portions and in individual portions. So use the appropriate amount of apples and crumb topping for how much you are making. Below is for a large portion and will make 5 portions.
5 apples, peeled and sliced (granny smith and McIntosh work well…in season is always best)
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup ground walnuts
2/3 cup brown sugar
1 t. cinnamon
3/4 stick cold butter
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Prepare crisp by stirring flour, walnuts, sugar and cinnamon into a small bowl. Cut butter into mixture with a pastry cutter or a fork. Place apples into an 8 by 8 casserole dish. Top with crumb topping. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until apples are tender. Test with a knife.
