Spaghetti and Meatballs

A classic made well. It’s easy, cheap, and out of this world. Jeff and I had to resist eating seconds and thirds.

1/2 lb. whole wheat spaghetti
1/2 lb. ground pork
1/2 lb. ground beef
1/2 cup italian seasoned bread crumbs
1 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup parmesan cheese
1 can San Marzano whole tomatoes
1 small yellow onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, coarsely chopped
1 t. sugar
salt and pepper
Freshly grated romano cheese

In a medium size bowl, combine the meat, bread crumbs, egg, parmesan cheese and salt and pepper. Combine with your hands and make them into medium-large size balls. In a large sauce pan, brown the meatballs on all sides, about 3 minutes total. Then, transfer the meatballs to a foil covered baking pan. Bake the meatballs for 10 minutes at 350 degrees. Remove from the oven and let cool. Meanwhile, in the same sauce pan, cook onions; stir occasionally for about 5 minutes. Add garlic and heat until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add tomatoes. Break up the tomatoes with a wooden spoon. Let the sauce simmer for about 30 minutes on medium-low. Stir about every 10 minutes. Add the meatballs to the sauce and stir to coat the meatballs.  In a large pot, bring water to a boil and cook noodles as directed on the box. Using a ladle, ladle about 3/4 cup of pasta water into the sauce and stir. To serve, place the pasta into a bowl. Top with sauce and meatballs. Add freshly grated romano cheese.


  1. Your dishes always make my mouth water! Remember when we used to play the food game where we would blindfold ourselves and select one of three items (one was always nasty tasting), then we would try to figure out what we just ate? We must have been foodies way back then. 🙂 Are you going to the DC Metropolitan Cooking and Entertaining Show this weekend??

    1. I definitely remember that…super fun! I’d like to play that now:)
      Unfortunately, I’m not going to teh DC cooking adn Entertaining Show this weekend. Are you? Jeff and I are going to Pittsburg this weekend. Hopefully, we will have some good food there:)
